Solutions For Common Challenges Living Off-Grid And Homesteading

OFF-GRID ESSENTIALS

There has been an increasing interest in off-grid homesteading. Individuals are looking to be more self-reliant, and the events of the global economy, food supply, and health and wellness have a huge role in pushing this idea forward.
Several people choose to live off-grid due to environmental reasons. With such living come a few challenges that you have to face, such as water issues, electricity, and gas. We explore five common challenges of off-grid homesteading and helpful solutions.

1. Water Supply

Water is a necessity for living, essential for survival. You will need access to fresh water for your livestock or vegetable garden and other things throughout the day.
You need to figure out a way to set up a consistent and clean water supply or an irrigation system that doesn’t require too much power. The best way to go about it is to get a huge water tank and store the monthly water there.

2. Food Supply

You, along with pets or livestock, need food for daily consumption. If you are living off the grid, there are low chances of you being near shops that’ll provide you with an adequate food supply.
It will be challenging to go to the city and will have you spending a lot on fuel. The best way to combat this situation is to become friends with a supplier who can get you your weekly supplies.

3. Power Supply

One of the biggest issues is the limited access to a power supply in an off-grid homestead. For that, individuals have upgraded to generators and off-grid solar panels that help them get a reliable power supply.
It might not be so much of an issue when the weather is nice. For extreme winters, you’ll need access to warm water and in-home heating.

4. Time Management

When you have so much to do, managing time can get hard. If you’re a family with kids, working from home or homeschooling can get you exhausted. Thus, it is best to set a time for everything. For all seasons, you should make a proper schedule that will allow you to get done with your priority tasks.

5. Seeking Help/Advice

When you choose to live off the grid, you’re isolating yourself from neighbors, families, friends, and people. It is not a wise idea when you need prompt help.
You will not be able to find like-minded people nearby and must rely on yourself or your phone for help. It is best to use social media and groups on Facebook or make a WhatsApp group with individuals you trust the most. So, in case of an emergency, you can ask the group.
Off-grid homesteading is for tough individuals who can survive in any situation. It takes much courage to live like that and a lot of planning, focus, preparation, and excellent problem-solving skills, and the reward goes beyond the initial effort.
